Biography

Rita L. Hoop has practiced law for 21 years and is admitted to the courts of Missouri and Kansas and the United States District Courts for the Western District of Missouri and Kansas. She is admitted to practice before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. She has been admitted pro hac vice to practice in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and various other administrative tribunals.

Intellectual Property

Rita Hoop began her career as a litigator and quickly became known as a lawyer who would not hesitate to take a case to trial if she did not like the settlement offered by the opposition. She brings this same results oriented style into protecting the client’s rights in their intellectual property.

Ms. Hoop represents clients in all phases of trademark protection, including initial availability searches, Federal and State registration of marks, policing and enforcement of trademark rights, and trademark licensing and consent and mutual non-disturbance agreements.

Ms. Hoop represents clients in trademark and copyright litigation in federal courts, state courts, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Ms. Hoop was on the plaintiff’s trial team in a federal jury trial in which the jury returned favorable verdicts on trademark and copyright infringement, including awards of statutory damages upon findings of intentional counterfeit trademark infringement and intentional copyright infringement. She has represented clients in trade dress infringement, unfair competition and false advertising cases.

Commercial Litigation

Rita Hoop has been trying cases throughout the first 21 years of her litigation concentrated career. Rita began her career trying domestic cases and became known to the judges in that field as a trial lawyer who understood the rules of evidence and trial tactics and who was eager to try her case if alternative dispute resolution was not the most efficient way to resolve a dispute. Since joining the commercial litigation group of WBBD, Ms. Hoop has applied this same results oriented style to a wide variety of commercial cases. In her 21 years of practicing law, Rita Hoop has dedicated much of her practice to her non-profit clients including religious organizations professional societies, trade associations, educational organizations, charitable foundations, parent organizations, youth sports groups, and community assistance groups. From corporate formation, assisting with Federal 501(c)3 tax exempt application, appealing property tax decisions to litigation, Ms. Hoop’s expertise and efficiency allows clients to remain focused on their mission.
